The president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and his Vice, Namadi Sambo wants to spend about N1 Billion on food next year.

Jonathan’s ‘Chop Money’ is contained in the breakdown of the 2012 budget he presented to the National Assembly last week.

According to the president, he and his deputy will consume rice, eba, tuwo, meat, fish and also buy spoons, plates and other kitchenware worth N1Billion in order to work very well for Nigerians next year.

In fact, the breakdown shows that an approximately N447million will be spent on food stuff and catering materials supplies for the president’s office, while N293 million will be spent on refreshment and meals for the president office and residence.

The breakdown also shows that N45.4 million has been earmarked for canteen and ‘kitchen equipment’ for the president’s residence.

Vice president Namadi Sambo will spend N104 million on foodstuff, catering and materials supplies. His cooking gas will also cost N6.2 million.

Apart from all these, another N45.5 million each will be used to buy household and kitchen equipments for the State House.

Many top Nigerians have condemned the N1Billion Jonathan/Sambo food allowance in the 2012 budget proposal.

Constitutional lawyer, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN) described it as ‘insane’. Another commentator wondered which belly Jonathan and Sambo will put all the food.

‘This is a period our President wants to remove oil subsidy. He wants N1 Billion for food while the other Nigerians are meant to starve. Our leaders are just insensitive’, an observer lamented.
