On Saturday, June 2, 2012, the GTBank – Lagos State Principal Cup 2011/2012 (Season 3) took the centre stage at the the prestigious Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.
The season 3 began with over 313 schools competing in the Zonal preliminaries. The winners from the stage then advanced to the District and State Finals where the best teams playes the Semi-finals and Finals sonsequently.
This years final match in the female category is between the CMS Girls Grammar School (winner) and Kuje Senior Secondary School while Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School beat their male counterpart from Sango Secondary School to clinch the coveted Principal Cup Trophy.
The winner in each category goes home with N1 Million naira cheque while the second, third and fourth gets N750, 000, N500, 000 and N250, 000 respectively.
A thrilling and entertaining musical performance by the Oleku crooner, Ice Prince Zamani lightened up the stadium while the spectators sing along with him.
Some of the notable individuals present at this year’s final include the ND/CEO of Guaranty Trust Bank, Mr Segun Agbaje, Lagos State, Head of Service Mr Adesegun Olusegun Ogunlewe, Commissioner for Youth & Sports, Mr Enitan Oshodi who represented the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola.
Principal Cup is aimed to provide a platform for identifying, nurturing and grooming young talented football players in the State. Some of them include notable sports personalities like Haruna Ilerika, Henry Nwosu, Stephen Keshi and Waheed Akanni who have represented the country on several occasions.
Guaranty Trust Bank was awarded the sponsorship of the 2009/2010 season’s of the Lagos State Principal’s Cup as well as the 2011 – 2013 editions. GTBank’s partnership with Lagos State Government is in line with its vision of raising role models for the society.
