Following yesterday’s appointment of Dr. Doyin Okupe as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan, the former holder of that office, Femi Fani-Kayode, took to social media yesterday to offer his applause.
Fani-Kayode who acted as a rabid attack dog against opponents of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and would later become Minister of Aviation, expressed the view that Dr. Okupe will do better than Labaran Maku, the Minister of Information, and Reuben Abati, Jonathan’s hired hand for Media and Publicity.
“Congratulations to my friend and brother Dr. Doyin Okupe,” he said on his Facebook page. “He has just been appointed SSA Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. He has taken over my old job at the Presidency and I am very happy for both him and the Government.”
He recalled that Dr. Okupe had previously served in the same capacity between 1999 and 2002, but that the office of Public Affairs, “which is far more combative and complicated,” did not yet exist.
“This appointment is a very strategic and timely one for the Jonathan Government and it should liven up the space,” he wrote. “I have known Doyin for almost 30 years and I can assure you that he is very tough, very thorough and very good at what he does.”
He commended the Jonathan administration “for bringing on board a deeply courageous man of good breeding and impeccable credentials.”
It would be recalled that in 2006, when renowned author Chinua Achebe turned down the Obasanjo government’s offer of a national honour, it was Fani-Kayode, reveling in his reputation as the presidency’s attack dog, who rose to bite the old man.
“No matter how distinguished and resourceful a person you are and no matter how brilliant and gifted an individual you are, if you feel that your country does not deserve to honour you, then we believe that you certainly do not deserve your country,” he said, writing himself into infamy.
